Blackgum is a medium sized tree with unique 90o branching. The trees are dioecious and both male and female flowers are need to produce the blue drupes favored by songbirds. Blackgum tolerates a wide range of soil conditions but prefers full sun in moist to mesic well drained acidic soils. Can tolerate heavy clay, drought, and slightly wetter conditions. Fall color is spectacular. It makes a beautiful shade and street tree.
