Description
Sweetbay magnolia is a multistem understory tree. Unlike other magolias, sweetbay prefers moist to soggy acidic soils . It tolerates heavy clay but will not perform as well in hot, dry soils. The small white / yellow flowers are highly fragrant and will bloom late spring to early summer. In mild climates, this magnolia is evergreen but throughout most of the midwest, leaves will brown and drop by late winter / spring. Sweetbay magnolia works well as a focal piece in the home landscape.
