Smooth or hazel alder is like speckled or tag alder with a southern touch.  Their ranges overlap with A. rugosa resides more in the northern sections of the Midwest / Canada whereas A. serrulata appears also in the southeastern US.   Appearance and site choice are almost identical.  Buds of tag alder will remain tighter to the twig whereas with hazel alder the buds extend out slightly.
