Description
Red mulberry is a fast growing medium sized tree. It is somewhat uncommon in the midwest where the omnipresent noxious invasive, white mulberry, is prevalent. Because of hybridization, it is increasingly difficult to find true red mulberry via open pollination. Red mulberry is dioecious and both flowers are required to produce the tasty red to black fruits. This tree is adaptable to various soil and light conditions but prefers full sun. Red mulberry fruit is produced abundantly on female trees and is sought after by songbirds.
