Description
Leatherwood is a slow growing woodland native. Site preference is filtered sun in rich, high organic well drained soils. Yellow flowers appear in early spring and are replaced by mature seeds in May. The black seeds are covered with a green covering making their appearance very cryptic. This is a small native with maximum size at 6′ x 6′. The wood of this shrub is very elastic and durable. You can coil the twig around your finger without breaking and it is almost impossible to tear off without pruners!
