Eastern or Canadian Hemlock is a true northern species that prefers cooler climates and even soil moisture. It is unique among evergreens in that it can tolerate shade quite well. In more southern locations within the midwest, planting in part to full sun is preferable. Hemlocks are slow growing but can obtain a large height. Like other evergreens, eastern hemlock provides winter shelter and food sources for wildlife.
