The closely related cousin to sugar maple with some taxonomists considering it a variation of Acer saccharum. As such, characteristics are nearly identical. The leaves of black maple tend to droop and the presence of mini – stipule “leaves” is usually a good diagnostic tool. Black maple is usually found of wet, well drained sites vs sugar maple which usually occur on more upland locations.
