Big-leaf magnolia is an understory tree that certainly lives up to its name! Leaves can be three feet long with a tropical look somewhat out of place in the temperate midwest. The flower is large, white and showy. Like other magnolias site preference is restricted to ideal sun to part sun in rich well drained soils. This gorgeous small tree is better suited for protected sites as strong winds will tatter the long leaves.
